Mahem and Bokmakierie self-catering cottages are situated on the edge of Wakkerstroom overlooking a vast wetland and the surrounding mountains. Wakkerstroom developed from a sleepy village to a popular tourist destination over the last 20 years due to the unique birding habitats that it encompasses (wetlands, grasslands and forests).

Birding is not the only attraction to Wakkerstroom though. The town and surrounding areas are inundated with history. There are a number of restaurants, pubs and shops to visit as well as plenty of local artists. There is no shortage of outdoor adventures either. These range from horse-riding to mountain-biking (see activities).

All in all, being only 3 hours from JHB or Pretoria, Wakkerstroom is a fantastic place to break away from the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy the fresh country air.
